Influence
In “Supernatural Horror in Literature” (1927), H. P. Lovecraft judged The Willows the finest weird tale in English. Blackwood’s method is not the village ghost of folklore but the suggestion that landscape—here the Danube willow marshes—is itself an intelligence. That shift from haunted house to haunted world is a documented source for later nature-horror and for the cosmic strain associated with Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgson.
