Influence
Through Weird Tales in the 1920s—the magazine that, from 1923, named and first sustained the American weird tale as a pulp genre—Lovecraft stated a method of cosmic indifferentism and a set of names later writers extended. Dagon (1919; Weird Tales, October 1923) is the early sketch and his first appearance in that magazine. The Call of Cthulhu (February 1928) and The Dunwich Horror (April 1929) are the magazine-period statements. The debts run backward to Blackwood, Machen, Chambers, and Hodgson.
